Human Rights Maturity Matrix
2
A practical way to benchmark, prioritise, and improve human rights due diligence over time.

NomoGaia’s Human Rights Maturity Matrix helps organisations assess how well their human rights due diligence is working in practice — and what “good” looks like at different stages of maturity. It’s designed for teams who want to move beyond ad hoc actions toward clear governance, consistent implementation, and measurable improvement. The Matrix supports internal planning, board and leadership oversight, and more credible external reporting by turning broad expectations into concrete indicators of progress. This resource is currently in draft and will be refined with additional guidance and examples.

How to use the Matrix
Two simple ways teams use the Matrix to plan improvements and demonstrate progress.

Benchmark your current practice

Use the Matrix to take stock of where your organisation is today across key elements of human rights due diligence — from commitments and governance to risk assessment, remedy, and tracking effectiveness. It helps teams identify gaps, clarify what “maturity” means in practical terms, and create a shared baseline across functions like legal, sustainability, procurement, and operations.

Set priorities and track improvement

The Matrix can also be used as a roadmap: define target maturity levels for different parts of the business, prioritise actions based on risk and feasibility, and track progress over time. This supports stronger internal accountability and makes it easier to show regulators, investors, and stakeholders how systems are improving — not just what policies exist.

Maturity in action
Human rights performance improves when organisations can measure where they are, agree on what “better” looks like, and assign responsibility for closing gaps. The Maturity Matrix is a practical tool for turning human rights expectations into a structured improvement plan — supporting stronger governance, clearer decision-making, and more credible due diligence over time. This draft will be expanded with more guidance and examples as the resource is finalised.
